Standards Applying to Bicycles

Bicycles and some bicycle accessories are governed by standards. These are created, after a process of wide consultation, by Standards Australia.

Mandatory standards are those that are policed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the associated State level Offices of Fair Trading (or Consumer Affairs)

AS/NZS 1927:2010   Pedal Bicycles – Safety Requirements  (Mandatory)

Specifies safety requirements for the design, assembly, and performance of all types of pedal bicycles and subassemblies of pedal bicycles having a wheelbase of 640 mm or greater, but excludes track racers and one-of-a-kind bicycles.

It also specifies requirements for the instructions to be given in a manual on use and maintenance, and for the instructions for the assembly of bicycles offered for supply in a partially assembled state.

NOTE: Bicycles having a wheelbase of less than 640 mm are covered by AS 1647.2 and NZS 5820.

AS/NZS 2063:2008   Bicycle helmets  (Mandatory)

Specifies basic performance requirements for impact attenuation, strength of the retention system and its attachment points. Includes peripheral vision clearance for lightweight protective helmets intended to mitigate the adverse effects of a blow to the head. Marking requirements are also proposed. Changes to this edition include amalgamation of the relevant requirements of AS 2063, Parts 1 and 2, a decrease in the recommended maximum mass for helmets, a requirement that the nominal mass of the helmet be marked on the helmet itself, a change in the recommended order in which tests are to be performed, and deletion of the requirement that the helmet manufacturer determines the helmet positioning index.

AS 3562:1990   Lighting equipment for bicycles

Specifies the design performance, photometric, electrical and mechanical requirements for lighting equipment for bicycles intended for use on public roads. The Standard does not apply to reflectors. Includes test methods for resistance to solvents, vibration, heat, moisture and corrosion, as well as methods for determining the luminous intensity of lamps. Also includes the characteristics of some common filament bulbs. The Standard is based on ISO 6742.1.

AS 2142:1978   Reflectors for Pedal Bicycles

Specifies the photometric and colorimetric and physical requirements for red, yellow, and white bicycle reflectors and yellow pedal reflectors, and includes relevant tests.

AS/NZS 4287:1995   Child carrier seats for pedal bicycles—Safety requirements

Specifies safety requirements for child carrier seats which may be attached to a bicycle other than a child's bicycle for the purpose of transporting as a passenger, a child having a body weight of not greater than 22 kg.

AS 2890.3-1993 Parking facilities - Bicycle parking facilities

Specifies requirements for the layout, design and security of bicycle parking facilities in any location, either on-street or off-street. Appendices give examples of bicycle parking hardware and examples of parking arrangements on footpaths.

AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2002  Safety of toys - Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties (ISO 8124.1:2000, MOD)

This Standard is the adoption of ISO 8124-1:2000 and specifies requirements for construction of children's toys.
Specifies constructional and labelling requirements for toys intended for use by children up to 14 years of age.
